How to Tie the FG Knot to Connect Braid and Leader
The FG knot connects braided line to fluorocarbon or monofilament leaders with a slim profile that runs smoothly through rod guides. It's a solid choice for saltwater where strength matters, though it has a steep learning curve. Success depends on keeping steady tension while you wrap.
What you need
- Braided line
- Leader material
- Super glue

Steps
- Hold the braided line under tension between your hands, rod, or knees.
- Lay the leader across the braided line at a slight angle.
- Wrap the leader around the braid, alternating over and under. Aim for 16 to 22 wraps; use fewer for heavy leaders and more for lighter ones. Pinch the wraps, add one half hitch around both lines, and snug it against the wraps.
- Pull the braided line and leader in opposite directions to compress and tighten the wraps.
- Add 2 to 4 half hitches around both lines and trim the leader tag close.
- Finish with 4 to 6 half hitches around the braid main line only, trim the braid tag, and pull-test the knot.
- Optionally, apply a drop of super glue to the half hitches, but avoid the plaited section.
Why it works
Strength from Tension
The knot's strength relies on maintaining tension throughout the wrapping process.

Plaiting and Profile
The crisscrossed plaiting causes the braid to bite into the thicker leader, increasing reliability. This knot is known for a slim profile that passes through guides without hanging up, making it a hit for saltwater anglers dealing with heavy fish.

Wrap Counts Differ
Adjust the count based on leader weight: use fewer wraps for heavy leaders and more for lighter ones.
Glue and Trimming
Some sources mention using super glue on the half hitches but not the plait, while others don't mention glue. For trimming, ensure tags are cut very close to the knot.
